So, What Exactly Is Gait Training?
Gait training is an important component of a physical therapy program designed to help people walk more efficiently, safely, and confidently, especially after a life-changing event such as an amputation. It strengthens your muscles and joints, improves posture and balance, reduces the risk of falls, and re-trains your body to build endurance. In short, it helps you get back on your feet.

Recognising Gait Abnormalities Often times, our bodies create what we call “compensatory movements”. These typically unintended movements may allow an amputee to reduce pain when walking, compensate for weak muscles, or even reduce the chances of tripping and falling. Although a small degree of gait deviation may be considered normal, too much compensatory motion needs to be properly addressed as it may have a direct impact in confidence, comfort, and energy expenditure during walking. When Is Gait Training Beneficial? Gait training is most beneficial when:
You are adjusting to a new prosthetic limb.
You are experiencing frequent stumbles or instability.
You have lost endurance or coordination post-surgery.
You are aiming to return to sports or an active lifestyle.
Simple exercises may also make a big impact. Your physical therapist will be able to customise these exercises to your ability and goals, ensuring you are set up for success.
